Learning when to skim and when to read
Many recent advances in deep learning for natural language processing have
come at increasing computational cost, but the power of these state-of-the-art
models is not needed for every example in a dataset. We demonstrate two
approaches to reducing unnecessary computation in cases where a fast but weak
baseline classier and a stronger, slower model are both available. Applying an
AUC-based metric to the task of sentiment classification, we find significant
efficiency gains with both a probability-threshold method for reducing
computational cost and one that uses a secondary decision network.Comment: 8 pages (4 article, 1 references, 3 appendix), 11 figures, 3 tables,

The Human Sciences: Obstacles and Opportunities
An explanation of the failure of the social sciences to attain their aim of providing improvable laws of human behavior, together with a recommendation about where to look for such laws
Tuning an activator-repressor clock employing retroactivity
Activator-repressor systems have been shown to
be capable of oscillations and are therefore an important clock
motif in the field of Synthetic and Systems Biology. In this paper,
we propose a method to regulate oscillatory behavior in such
systems by the addition of DNA binding sites for the proteins
involved in the clock network. We show that the retroactivity
effect caused by this addition can effectively change the relative
timescales among the protein dynamics and impact the behavior
of the clock. We also employ root locus analysis to obtain a
graphical interpretation of the results
Selected Papers on Noncommutative Geometry
This volume contains selected works of Alexander Rosenberg centering on his theory of noncommutative spaces. The articles are based on preprints published by the Max-Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, published with their permission and the permissions of the Rosenberg family. We hope that grouping the selected papers together will give the reader an opportunity to understand the broadness and deepness of Rosenberg’s ideas.https://newprairiepress.org/ebooks/1000/thumbnail.jp
